International shipping is already, by far, the most carbon efficient mode of commercial transport in relation to freight capacity and distance travelled. In recent years, global and local regulations covering exhaust gas emissions have become progressively more stringent. In the case of 4-stroke marine engines, they concentrate on limiting emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and the content of sulphur in the fuel. Most recently, emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) have also come under scrutiny. Ship operators, -designers and shipyards are faced with the legal demand to fulfill environmental sustainability while keeping operational costs as low as possible.
